Ali, S Wazed (1890-1951)  essayist and writer, was born in Bara Tajpur village under serampore subdivision in Hughli. His father, Sheikh Belayet Ali, was a businessman who had settled in Shillong. S Wazed Ali started his education in a pathshala in his village home in 1895. Later he studied at Shillong Mokhar High School, passing the Entrance Examination in 1906 with distinction and winning a gold medal. He passed the IA from Aligarh College in 1908 and BA from Allahabad University in 1910. In 1912 he went to England for higher studies and completed another BA as well as the Bar-at Law from Cambridge University. He started practising as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court in 1915. He was appointed Magistrate of Calcutta Presidency in 1923 and retired from this post in 1945.



S Wazed Ali edited and published a monthly English journal, Bulletin of the Indian Rationalistic Society, in 1919 and a Bangla monthly magazine, Gulistan, in 1932. He chaired the committee that was formed to give a reception to kazi nazrul islam at Calcutta Albert Hall on 15 December 1929 and read the citation at the reception. The same year he presided over the annual conference of the Assam Muslim Student Society. He chaired the Nikhil Banga Primary Teachers Conference held at sirajganj in 1935. S Wazed Ali was progressive and liberal. His writings reflect his love of truth and beauty as well as his historical and moral sense. He wrote successfully in a variety of genres: stories, novels, essays, and travelogues. His major writings include the collections of essays: Jibaner Shilpa (1941), Prachya O Pratichya (1943), Bhabisyater Banali (1943), Akbarer Rastra Sadhana (1949), Muslim Sangskrtir Adarsha; the collections of stories: Guldasta (1927), Mashuker Darbar (1930), Badshahi Galpa (1944), Galper Majlish (1944); the travelogues: Pashchim Bharat (1948) and Motar Yoge Ranchi Safar (1949); and the novel, Granadar Shes Bir (1940).

S Wazed Ali died in Calcutta on 10 June 1951. [Shahida Akhter]
