Bheramara Upazila (kushtia district) with an area of 153.72 sq km, is bounded by lalpur upazila on the north, mirpur upazila on the south, ishwardi upazila and the ganges (Padma) on the east, daulatpur (Kushtia) upazila on the west, and. The Ganges flows by the side of the upazila. A part of the hardinge bridge, constructed in 1912, is located in this upazila. Damodar Beel is notable.



Bheramara (Town) The town is now a municipality with an area of 3.26 sq km and population 20676; male 49.52%, female 50.48%. It has 9 wards and 13 mahallas. The literacy rate among the town people is 50.3%. The town has one dakbungalow and one rest house.

Administration Bheramara thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 6 union parishads, 42 mouzas and 61 villages.

Archeological heritage and relics Georgebari at Chandipur village (1889).

Marks of War of Liberation Mass grave 1 .

Population 144221; male 51.55%, female 48.45%; Muslim 97.08%, Hindu 2.87% and others 0.05%.

Religious institutions Mosque 620, temple 10, tomb 2.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 28.1%, male 32.6%, female 23.2%. Educational institutions: college 4, high school 24, government primary school 34, non-government primary school 19. Bheramara Model Primary School (1869) is notable.

Locally published newspapers and periodicals The Daily Kushtia Darpan and weekly Mukur and Simanta Katha.

Cultural organisations Public library 1, rural club 40, theatre group 1, library 4, cinema hall 3, women's association 2, literary and cultural group 2, music school 2.

Main occupations Agriculture 22.8%, transport 2.04%, commerce 15.81%, agricultural labourer 26.81%, wage labourer 7.95%, construction 1.56%, industry 1.97%, service 10.22%, others 10.85%.

Land use Cultivable land 9733.95 hectares; fallow land 48.56 hectares; single crop 38%, double crop 55% and treble crop 7%.

Land control Landless 45%, small peasants 40%, medium and 15% rich.

Value of first rate arable land The market value of land of the first grade is approximately Tk. 5000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, wheat, mustard, sweet potato, sunflower, onion, garlic, betel leaf, tobacco, sugarcane.

Extinct and nearly extinct crops Sesame, linseed, kaun

Main fruits Mango, banana, jackfruit, papaya, kamranga.

Fisheries, dairies, poultries Fishery 60, poultry 49, hatchery 15.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 69.62 km, semi pucca 17.37 km and mud road 155.47 km; railways 24 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), bullock cart and horse carriage (nearly extinct), boat.

Manufactories Bidi factory 4, chemical industry 1, salt factory 1, 60-megawatt Power Plant, welding 10.

Cottage industries Weaving 40, bamboo work 100, goldsmith 200, tailoring 380, blacksmith 180, potteries 180 and wood work 480.

Hats and bazars Hats and bazars are 30, fairs 2, noted of which are Satbaria Hat and Ghora Shaha Mazar Mela.

Main exports Tobacco, betel leaf, jute.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, Uddipan, asa, Gonoshahajjo Sangstha, Samaj Kalyan Sangstha, Janabima, Meghna, BRDB, ATCL, ITCL and Dishari.
