Bisad-Sindhu a novel by Mir Mosharraf Hossain, based on the story of the battle of Karbala and published in three parts: the first part in 1885, the second in 1887 and the third in 1891.

The book narrates the story of the martyrdom of the Prophet muhammad's (Sm) grandsons Hasan and Husain as a result of the rivalry between them and Yezid, the son of Muawiya, over the succession to the Caliphate. The martyrdom of Hasan and Husain is a historical fact. But the story as described by mosharraf hossain has a number of fictional episodes. The writer appears to have been influenced by the puthi literature of nineteenth-century Bengal.

Mosharraf Hossain ascribes the main cause of the feud between Yezid and Hasan to a quarrel over a woman named Zainab. When Zainab marries Hasan after being divorced by her first husband, Yezid influences Hasan's wife to poison her husband. After Hasan's death, Husain, the younger brother, is persuaded by the people of Kufa to declare himself the Caliph instead of Yezid. In the fight that ensues, Husain and his band of followers are cut down by Yezid's army at Karbala.

Bisad-Sindhu is not only Mir Mosharraf Hossain's masterpiece, it may also be seen as the conscious attempt by a Muslim Bengali writer to turn to his Islamic roots to produce a prose epic. [Mohammad Abdul Awwal]
