Harinakunda Upazila (jhenaidaha district) with an area of 227.19 sq km, is bounded by kushtia sadar upazila on the north, jhenaidaha sadar upazila on the south, shailkupa upazila on the east, alamdanga and chuadanga sadar upazilas on the west. Narayankandi, Kapashhatia and Chandpur Baors are notable. About 85% land is under Ganges-Kobadak Irrigation Project.



Harinakundu (Town) consists of two mouzas. The area of the town is 19.97 sq km. The town has a population of 17533; male 51.06% and female 48.94%. Density of population per sq km is 877. Literacy rate among the town people is 23.9%. It has one dakbungalow.

Administration Harinakunda thana, now an upazila, was established in 1863. The upazila consists of eight union parishads, 77 mouzas and 129 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics Remnants of Nilkuthis at Joradaha, Dhulia, Bhaina, Sonatonpur and Harinakundu.

Historical events Bagha Jatin and Keran Ray led the anti British movement in this upazila. The people of this upazila participated in the Indigo resistance movement.

Population 162078; male 51.57%, female 48.43%; Muslim 92.29%, Hindu 6.63% and others 1.08%.

Religious institutions Mosque 125, temple 16, church 1, sacred place 1 and tomb 5. Noted religious institutions: Joradaha doomed Mosque, Sreepur Mosque, Upazila Mosque, Parbatipur Mosque, Andulia Mosque, tomb of Fakir Mahmud Biswas at Kulbaria and Kali Mandir at Bhabanipur.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 20.8%; male 26.1% and female 15.1%. Educational institutions: government college 1, non-government college 3, government girl's high school 1, non-government high school 27, junior high school 5, madrasa 8, government primary school 51, non-government primary school 77 and nurses training centre 1. Noted educational institutions: Lalan Shah Government College (1972), Harinakunda Pilot High School (1945), Joradaha High School (1872), Harinakunda Priyanath High School (1872).

Cultural organisations Club 22, public library 1, cinema hall 5, theatre group 4, opera party 1, literary society 3 and sporting club 12.

Main occupations Agriculture 54.93%, agricultural labourer 25.74%, wage labourer 1.72%, commerce 7.55%, service 2.31% and others 7.75%.

Land use Total cultivable land 17791.97 hectares, fallow land 4972.07 hectares; single crop 18.06%, double crop 65.22% and treble crop land 16.72%; cultivable land under irrigation 18.06%.

Land control Among the peasants 23% are landless, 36% small, 27% intermediate and 14% rich.

Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk 7500 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, jute, mustard seed, wheat, betel leaf, potato, brinjal, onion, garlic, sugarcane, varieties of pulse and vegetables.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Linseed, sesame, rai mustard seed, kaun, barley and tobacco.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, coconut, kul, banana, guava, litchi, jamrul, ata, bel and black berry.

Fisheries, dairies, poultries Dairy 2, poultry 7 and fishery 5.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 51 km, semi pucca 34 km, mud road 423 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin, horse carriage and bullock cart. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.

Manufactories Rice mill 57, ice factory 2, biscuit factory 3 and welding 11.

Cottage industries Weaving 500, bamboo work 2, goldsmith 4, blacksmith 9, potteries 3, wood work 115, tailoring 280, bidi 3.

Hats, bazars and fairs Total number of hats and bazars are 26, most noted of which are Harinakunda, Parbatipur, Bhabanipur, Joradaha, Porahati Charpara, Rishkhali, Dakhalpur, Kulbaria, Narayankandi, Satbridge and Mandia Bazar; fairs 3.

Main exports Paddy, jute, sugarcane, date molasses, betel leaf and vegetables.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, grameen bank and Nijera Shikhi.

Health centres Upazila health complex 1, family welfare centre 6, health services centre 11 and community clinic 10. [Tipu Sultan Bari]
