Jamiruddin, Shaikh (1870-1937) writer and Islamic preacher, was born in January 1870 at Garadobe Bahadurpur village in gangni upazila in meherpur district. While studying at Meherpur Amjhupi Christian School and Krishnanagar Normal School, Jamiruddin was greatly influenced by the Christian missionary teachers and ultimately got converted to christianity in 1887. He graduated in theology from St. Paul's Divinity College at Allahabad in 1891. He later studied Christianity and Sanskrit, Arabic, Greek and Hebrew literature and grammar at Divinity College, Kolkata. In addition to Bangla and English, he knew Urdu, Persian and Latin.



Eight years after his baptism, a radical change came over Jamiruddin, and he returned to islam. Henceforth, he used his superb oratory and knowledge of various languages to preach the message of Islam. He spoke at various forums and published essays in different newspapers and magazines for proselytising purposes.

Jamirudin wrote a number of books on religious issues. He also translated books and wrote essays on social issues. Among his books are Hazrat Isa Ke (To Hazrat Isa), Meher Charita, Islami Baktrta, Shrestha Nabi Hazrat Mohammad (SM), and Padrir Dhokabhanjan. He also wrote an autobiography: Amar Jibani O Islam Grahan Brttanta. He died on 2 June 1937 and was buried in his family graveyard. [Muhammad Shamsul Alam]
