Mirpur Upazila (kushtia district) with an area of 317.35 sq km, is bounded by bheramara and ishwardi upazilas on the north, alamdanga and kushtia sadar upazilas on the south, Kushtia sadar upazila on the east, daulatpur (Kushtia), gangni and Alamdanga upazilas on the west. Mirpur (Town) consists of 9 wards and 13 mahallas. The area of the town is 6.81 sq km. The population of the town is 19076; male 52.27%, female 47.73%; density of population is 2801 per sq km. The literacy rate among the town people is 36.7%. The town has a dakbungalow. Administration Mirpur thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 1 municipality, 13 union parishads, 122 mouzas and 197 villages. Population 266046; male 51.76% and female 48.24%; Muslim 97.32%, Hindu 2% and others 0.68%. Religious institutions Mosque 280, temple 18. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 21.3%; male 25.9% and female 16.2%. Land use Cultivable land 23000 hectare, fallow land 1200 hectare; single crop 40.2%, double crop 43.08%, treble crop 16.72%. Land under irrigation 95%. Land control Among the peasants, 20% are landless, 28% small, 42% medium and 10% rich. Value of land Market value of land of first grade is Tk 3700 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops Paddy, wheat, jute, sugarcane, potato, tobacco, mustard seeds, onion, betel leaf, garlic. Extinct and nearly extinct crops Indigo, sesame, linseed. Main fruits Mango, blackberry, banana Fisheries, dairies, poultry Fishery 124, poultry 37, hatchery 4, dairy 97. Communication facilities Roads: pucca 82 km, semi pucca 112.2 km and mud road 497.17 km; railway 35 km. Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), bullock cart and horse carriage (nearly extinct), boat. Cottage industries Bidi 1, weaving 22, bamboo work 147, wood work 200, goldsmith 87, blacksmith 700, potteries 750 and welding 22. Hats and bazars Hats and bazars are 8, most noted of which are Mirpur Cattle Market and the Amla Sadarpur Hat; fair 1 (Baishakhi Mela). Main exports Tobacco, jute and betel leaf. NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, asa, grameen bank, BRDB, ADD, Swanirvar Bangladesh, Sanchaye Mukti, Shetu, Jagarani, Pipasha and Partner.
