Momen, Nurul (1906-1989) educationist and playwright, was born in the district of jessore, son of Nurul Arefin, a physician. Nurul Momen passed his BL examination from the University of Dhaka and started practising law at the Calcutta High Court. In 1948, he went to England for higher studies, graduating in Law from London University. While in London, he used to conduct a Bangla children's programme for BBC. He also worked as Education Officer at the Pakistan High Commission in London for a year. On his return, he joined the University of Dhaka, retiring from the institution in 1972.

Nurul Momen believed in the ideology of united Pakistan, and that is why he did not support the war of liberation in 1971. As a playwright, he exposed the inconsistencies and conflicts of his time in his plays through satire and farce. Among his major plays are Rupantar, Nemesis, Yadi Eman Hato, Naya Khandan, Alochhaya, Shatkara Ashi, and Yeman Ichchha Teman. He received the Bangla Academy Award in 1961 and the Ekushey Padak in 1978 for his contribution to literature. [Mohsin Hussain]
