Phulpur Upazila (mymensingh district) with an area of 580.21 sq km, is bounded by haluaghat and dhobaura upazilas on the north, mymensingh sadar upazila on the south, gauripur and purbadhala upazilas on the east, nakla upazila on the west. Main rivers are Kharia and Kangsha. Phulpur (Town) consists of 6 mouzas. The town has a population of 12292; male 52.63%, female 47.37%; literacy rate among the town people is 36.7%. Administration Phulpur thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 20 union parishads, 377 mouzas and 411 villages. Historical events During the War of Liberation in 1971 the Pak army arrested nine Bangalees along with Satyendranath Datta, the then Head Master of the Payari High School and took them to the Sarsapur mass killing site. The Pak army killed everybody except the Head Master who could manage to escape. In a battle between the Muktibahini and the Pak army at village Ramsona of Sandhara union 33 members of the Muktibahini were killed. Religious institutions Mosque 326, temple 40, church 5 and tomb 5, most noted of which are Phulpur Bus Stand Jami mosque, Tarakandha Jami mosque, Phulpur Sahapara temple. Population 459046; male 50.98%, female 49.02%; Muslim 95.21%, Hindu 4.29%, Buddhist 0.046%, Christian 0.23% and others 0.22%; notable ethnic nationals: Garo. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 20.90%; male 25.90% and female 15.60%. Educational institutions: college 6, high school 48, madrasa 188, government primary school 133, non-government primary school 94, community school 5, satellite school 10. Cultural organisations Club 95, theatre group 5, cinema hall 4. Main occupations Agriculture 53.76%, forestry and fishing 2.19%, agricultural labourer 23.82%, wage labourer 2.67%, commerce 5.99%, service 2%, others 9.57%. Land use Total cultivable land 51299.03 hectares; fallow land 91.50 hectares. Land control Among the peasants 28.60% are landless, 36.40% small, 26.42% intermediate and 8.58% rich. Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk 8500 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops Paddy, wheat, potato, pulse, onion, garlic and chilli. Extinct or nearly extinct crops Jute and aus paddy. Main fruits Jackfruit, mango, banana, watermelon and litchi. Fisheries, dairies, poultries Fishery 70, dairy 16, poultry 25, hatchery and nursery 142. Communication facilities Roads: pucca 33 km, semi pucca 49 km, railways 2 km. Traditional transport palanquin, bullock cart. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct. Manufactories Rice mill 76, ice cream factory 5, saw mill 15, biscuit factory 5 and bidi factory 1. Cottage industries Weaving 6, goldsmith 40, wood work 150, tailoring 300, welding 20, bamboo work 3000. Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 55, most noted are Amuakandha, Tarakandha, Balia, Bhaitkandhi and Kashiganj. Main exports Rice, wheat, onion and garlic. NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are World Vision, caritas, brac, asa, Ahsania Mission, grameen bank, CIDA, TSS, Sujani, SS, Grameen Manabik Unnayan Sangshta, Palli Unnayan Prayas.
