Raiganj Upazila (sirajganj district) with an area of 267.83 sq km, is bounded by sherpur (Bogra) and dhunat upazilas on the north, ullahpara and Kamarkhanda upazilas on the south, sirajganj sadar upazila on the east and tarash upazila on the west. Main rivers are bangali, karatoya and ichamati. Raiganj (Town) consists of 2 mouzas. The area of the town is 2.62 sq km. The town has a population of 5468; male 51.41% and female 48.59%. The density of population is 2087 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 36.8%. Administration Raiganj thana, now an upazila, was established in 1937. The upazila consists of 9 union parishads and 193 mouzas and 269 villages. Historical events Many people were killed at Salanga Bazar in 1947. Population 225028; male 50.91%, female 49.09%; Muslim 97%, Hindu 3%; ethnic nationals: approximately 1000 families. Religious institutions Mosque 355, temple 55. Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 21.8%; male 28.2% and female 15.1%. Educational institutions: college 10, high school 35, madrasa 30, primary school 200. Main occupations Agriculture 47.13%, agricultural labourer 27.69%, wage labourer 2.02%, commerce 9.29%, service 2.74% and others 11.13%. Land use Total land 20028.33 hectares, fallow land 6640.23 hectares Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk. 7500 per 0.01 hectare. Main crops Paddy, jute, wheat, potato, sugarcane and chilli. Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, black berry, papaya, guava, litchi and banana. Fisheries, dairies, poultries Poultry 20, fishery 35 and hatchery 4. Traditional transport palanquin, dhuli and horse carriage. These means of transport is either extinct or nearly extinct. Cottage industries Weaving 2000. Hats, bazars and fairs The most noted hats and bazars are Bandhaikona and Salanga, NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, proshika, grameen bank and Ankur Kalyan Sangstha.
