Tradition goes that Niamatullah gave up a luxurious life, turned ascetic and came to India to preach Islam. Eventually he came to Bengal and settled at dhaka where he established his khanqah. He waged war against idol worship and converted a large number of people to Islam. He was called Butshekan meaning iconoclast.
