Shikha a magazine, was the mouthpiece of the muslim sahitya samaj (Muslim Literary Society), Dhaka. Edited by abul hussain, the first issue of the magazine was published in Chaitra 1333 BS (1926). The magazine aimed to bring about changes in the life and thought of Muslims and published essays and articles read out at the annual convention of the Samaj, as well as the speech of its chairman and the proceedings of the convention. Members of the progressive elite, known as Shikhagosthi (Shikha circle), also contributed to the magazine.
On the title page of the magazine was printed the motto: Jnan yekhane simabaddha, buddhi sekhane arasta, mukti sekhane asambhab (Freedom is impossible where knowledge is limited and intellect moribund). Inspired with the thought, the members of the
Shikha circle instituted out the buddhir mukti andolan (movement for intellectual freedom). The magazine lasted for only five years. [Nurul Amin]
