Tarash Upazila (sirajganj district) with an area of 297.20 sq km, is bounded by sherpur (Bogra) upazila on the north, bhangura and chatmohar upazilas on the south, raiganj and ullahpara upazilas on the east, gurudaspur and singra upazilas on the west. Gumni River is notable.



Tarash (Town) consists of one mouza. The area of the town is 5.09 sq km. The town has a population of 5368; male 53.7% and female 46.3%. Literacy rate among the town people is 38.4%.

Administration Tarash thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 8 union parishads, 178 mouzas and 243 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics Homestred of Behula; tomb of Hazrat Shah Sharif Jindabi (R) and Shiva Mandir at Talser.

Historical events During the War of Liberation in 1971 a battle was fought between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at Naogaon in which 130 members of the Pak army and Razakar were killed.

Population 135435; male 50.21%, female 49.79%; Muslim 89.03%, Hindu 10.88% and others 0.09%.

Religious institutions Mosque 248, temple 5, church 2, tomb 4.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 22.6%; male 30.25% and female 14.9%. Educational institutions: college 5, high school 25, madrasa 16, technical training 2, government primary school 49, non-government primary school 75. Noted educational institution: Tarash Degree College (1972).

Cultural organisations Club 20, public library 1, cinema hall 1, theatre stage 1 and women's organisation 4.

Main occupations Agriculture 55.5%, agricultural labourer 31.86%, wage labourer 1.33%, commerce 3.32%, service 1.77% and others 6.22%.

Land control Among the peasants, 24% are landless, 42% small, 25% intermediate and 9% rich; cultivable land per head 0.05 hectare.

Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is approximately Tk 5000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, wheat, mustard seed, onion, garlic and kalai.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Jute and sesame.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, guava, papaya, watermelon, cucumber and banana.

Fisheries, dairies, poultries Poultry 1, diary 1, fishery 515.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 16 km, semi pucca 40 km and mud road 350 km.

Traditional transport Palanquin, bullock cart and horse carriage. These means of transport is either extinct or nearly extinct.

Manufactories Ice factory 2.

Cottage industries Cottage industries include weaving, goldsmith, bamboo and cane work, nakshi kantha, etc.

Main hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 22, most noted of which are Baruhash, Binshara and Gulta Bazar; fairs 3, most noted of which is Behula Mela.

Main exports Paddy, rice, fish, watermelon.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, asa, proshika, grameen bank.
