It is easy to use Banglapedia. All articles are arranged alphabetically and each article heading is in boldface type. The alphabetization is letter by letter. The headings of biographical articles are inverted and alphabetized by the subject's surname, with the exception of articles on ancient and medieval historical figures. Thus, Huseyn Shahid Surawardy appears as Suhrawardy, Huseyn Shahid, but Murshid Quli Khan, the late medieval ruler, is listed not in inverted form but in normal style as Murshid Quli Khan. In inverted titles (Music, traditional), the letter by letter alphabetization continues to the end of the heading, regardless of inversion or commas. Biographical entries of the same name and spelling appear with serial superscript numbers. Narratives of larger articles are sometimes organised under several sub-headings and even sub-sub-headings. Sub-headings are listed in bold italic, and the sub-sub-headings in normal italic. Sub-headings of third degree appear, though rarely, in normal typeface followed by a dash.
Cross-references are used extensively in the text to guide readers to other relevant articles and texts containing related material. References to those headings are printed in small capitals. All articles and matter mentioned in small capitals are to be found in the encyclopedia and will provide additional information. But all article heads are not repeated in small capitals. Place names are often not mentioned in small capitals, though there are articles on them. Besides cross-references, many articles have 'see also' or 'also see' suggestions, directing readers to texts in other relevant articles in the encyclopedia. An additional aid to the reader is the bibliography that appear at the end of many articles. References in the bibliography do not normally exceed four important works on the subject under discussion.
Illustrations are combined with text in Banglapedia to make the communication of information easier and interactive. Banglapedia has more than three thousand illustrations, over one thousand of them being in four colours. Many illustrations have been created exclusively for the encyclopedia by commissioned photographers and illustrators. Symbols of religious faiths, traditions and social practices have also been illustrated, where feasible, for greater insight and clarification. In illustrating historical, literary and biographical articles, Banglapedia has used archaeological heritage, including ancient sites, mosques, temples, terra cotta, calligraphy, manuscripts, painting, pictures and photographs. The most richly illustrated entries are those in the areas of natural and biological sciences. Most of these are accompanied by illustrations of flora and fauna and natural objects. The articles on zilas and upazilas have been embellished with maps. There are also thematic maps illustrating geographical and geological features of Bangladesh. There are also maps conveying basic information on such topics as climate, economy, population distribution, and historical development.
Names of contributors are given in full at the end of the articles or sections of articles written by them. A full list of authors, containing their identities, has been appended to the last volume.
To set up dates according to international standards, local calendars (Saka, Bangla and Hijri) have been converted to the modern Gregorian or new international style. But when required, local calendars have been used with or without mentioning the corresponding Gregorian style.
